Roundtable discussion – Youth Forces of Change | Prevention of armed violence in Latin America & the Caribbean

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) is celebrating two years since the adoption of General Assembly resolution 74/64 on youth, disarmament and non-proliferation. With this resolution, UN Member States reaffirm the significant and positive contribution youth can make to the promotion and the attainment of sustainable peace and security in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation. In a similar manner, UN Security Council resolution 22/50 (adopted in 2015) on youth, peace and security, promotes the inclusive participation and representation of youth at all levels of decision-making in the promotion of peace, conflict transformation and the prevention of violence. These initiatives are in line with the Youth 2030 strategy to guide and strengthen the UN’s work with and for young people in three pillars: peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.

In recognition of the importance of bringing disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation issues closer to the youth of Latin America and the Caribbean (around 165 million people between the ages of 10 and 24), UNLIREC will host a roundtable to showcase various youth-led initiatives aimed at the prevention and reduction of armed violence in the region with the aim of fostering exchange and dialogue to inspire and share ideas and projects that will allow new generations to become involved in these matters.
